An essential part of the old Serbian folk costume in Bačka was a waistcoat. It was most often made of cherry, red or blue silk or velvet. It was hemmed with gold purchased lace, 3 to 4 cm wide, ending on lappets. Lappets were made of the same material the waistcoat was made of, attained by cutting the cloth in long pieces, in the shape of semi-circular ornaments fitted one next to the other. A very distinctive characteristic of the waistcoat of this ethnic area was that on its back it was just a few centimetres wide.
